In our country, mosaic is generally known as a product consisting of two layers of mortar: one top layer that shows the aggregate and color of the product, and another bottom layer that is a combination of sand and black cement. It is commonly produced in the 40×40 cm size.

However, the range of mosaic products is much broader than this. In Iran, mosaics are produced in sizes 20×20, 25×25, 30×30, 40×40, 40×60, and also as stair treads. Each of these can also be offered as plain or patterned (grooved) flooring. In terms of thickness, mosaics are generally divided into two categories: double-layer mosaics with a thickness between 3 to 4 cm, and single-layer mosaics with a thickness of 17 to 19 mm.

Floor coverings, whether double-layer or single-layer, can be used in indoor building spaces, rooftops, and even courtyards. However, for weight reduction purposes, the use of single-layer products is more emphasized for indoor spaces. Patterned products, also known as courtyard mosaics, as their name suggests, are generally used in landscaping and sidewalks, and due to the variety of available designs, they can add special beauty to the environment.

When selecting courtyard mosaics, considering the size of the space is very important, because some designs due to their specific shape must be laid in a pattern, and if the intended space is not large enough to accommodate at least four pieces together, the desired visual effect will not be achieved.

Finally, it is also necessary to mention that mosaic can also be used in building facades. Given the wide range of colors, aggregates, and granite or rustic surfaces of mosaics, they can be safely used as a durable material for building facades resistant to environmental impacts and changes.
